Event Description

Building Control Systems Cybersecurity – Challenges and Lessons Learned

Supporting the RMF / Accreditation process for Facility-Related Control Systems (FRCS) is a significant undertaking.  The path is filled with obstacles and challenges, and requires a common understanding of roles and responsibilities, dedicated support from multiple parties, technical expertise, innovative thinking, unparalleled administrative skills, lots of coffee, and an intense amount of patience.  Bill Smith of Burns & McDonnell, the cybersecurity Project Manager for Project P-913 (NCTAMS LANT) will share his experience and offer lessons learned during this recent project.

Bill Smith received his Nuclear Engineering degree from the University of Michigan.  He then joined the US Navy’s Nuclear Propulsion program, and spent his 22-year career as a Surface Warfare Officer, serving on Aircraft Carriers and Destroyers.  After retiring from the Navy, Bill went back to school and received a Master’s Degree in Cybersecurity, and has been a cyber consultant for 6 years.  He joined Burns & McDonnell in October of 2021.
