The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), the premier professional military engineering association in the United States, unites architecture, engineering, construction (A/E/C), facility management and environmental entities and individuals in the public and private sectors to prepare for—and overcome—natural and man-made disasters, and to improve security at home and abroad.  Headquartered in Alexandria, VA, SAME provides its more than 27,000 members extensive opportunities for training, education and professional development through a robust offering of conferences, workshops, networking events and publications. With a membership that includes recent service academy graduates and retired flag officers, project managers and corporate executives, Department of Defense civilians, private-sector experts and everyone in between, SAME is bridging the gaps between critical stakeholders to advance the field of military engineering and help secure our nation.

The Society of American Military Engineers is the only nonprofit professional engineering education organization that actively promotes the advancement of both individual technical knowledge and the collective engineering capabilities of governments, the uniformed services and private industry.  Our goal is to unite public and private sector entities and individuals in the A/E/C fields so that we can prepare for and overcome natural and man made disasters, acts of terrorism and improve security at home and abroad.

The Hampton Roads Post accomplishes this goal locally by supporting monthly luncheon meetings and other professional/social activities attended by members of local government, military, private industry, students and other interested parties. These meetings are announced via our e-mail distribution list and quarterly newsletter. We are supported by the national Society of American Military Engineers and publications such as The Military Engineer, which also promotes the interests and goals of our society and its members. Please peruse our website to discover the benefits of SAME Hampton Roads Post membership.

Event Description: No registration required!

Join us for a walking tour of Fort Monroe, led by John Crossen. Today, Fort Monroe is a mixture of state and federal ownership. Upon closure in 2011, the majority of the property reverted back to Commonwealth ownership, under the clauses of the original deed with Virginia. However, all property and land inside the moat, including the moat, became a National Monument under Federal National Park Service Control. Today we will be focusing our walking tour inside and around the moat and casemates and all grounds inside the casemates. We will also exit the Main Gate on foot and explore a portion of the town which grew up around the casemates. Attendees are free to continue walking around the town and grounds for as long as they like.

John is native of the Tidewater Region and grew up in Jamestown. He has a Bachelor of the Arts Degree in American History and Government and a Master of Arts in American History, with a Master's Thesis on Fort Monroe. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering from Old Dominion University, a Master of Public Administration in Environmental Science from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University and a Juris Doctorate in Environmental and Regulatory Law. John was the United States Army ACSIM BRAC Fort Monroe Program Director from 2008 until final closure in 2012. John was also the Fort Monroe Environmental Director. In the final year of Fort Monroe John put on another hat as the Fort Monroe IMCOM Garrison Acting Deputy Garrison Commander. During his time at Fort Monroe, John and family utilized and often lived in the officer’s quarters next door to Robert E Lee's Quarters, inside the moat and casemates.

This is a FREE event, and lunch will not be provided.  Please wear comfortable shoes as we will be walking outdoors, but will remain on walkways and roads.  Bottled water will be provided, but feel free to bring your own water.  Cameras are allowed and you are encouraged to take as many photos as you would like.

Voluntary Covid-19 Vaccination Encouragement

At this time, The Society of American Military Engineers, Hampton Roads Post, is returning to in-person monthly meetings, forums and sessions and is encouraging voluntary Covid-19 vaccination of all members who seek to participate in these in-person events. In accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia and United States CDC guidelines, SAME seeks to provide and maintain a gathering place and workplace that is free of known hazards and the Hampton Roads Board strongly encourages all members and guests to receive this vaccination to minimize the risk of this infectious disease, especially in light of the new Delta and Lambda variants. This encouragement is in concert with recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Commonwealth of Virginia Covid-19 Task Force and with local Hampton Roads health officials. Members and guests are encouraged to obtain any Covid vaccination wherever they choose.
