About SAME
The Society of American Military Engineers Mission and VisionThe Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), the premier professional military engineering association in the United States, unites architecture, engineering, construction (A/E/C), facility management and environmental entities and individuals in the public and private sectors to improve national security at home and abroad. The SAME Mission is “To promote and facilitate engineering support for national security by developing and enhancing relationships and competencies among uniformed services, public- and private-sector engineers and construction professionals, and by developing future engineers through outreach, financial support and mentoring.” The SAME Vision is “To be a premier global engineering organization leading the professional and personal growth of all members in support of military readiness and development of solutions to national security challenges.”
SAME History
The Society of American Military Engineers grew from our nation's experiences in World War I, when more than 11,000 civilian engineers were called to duty as the United States entered “The War to End All Wars.” Upon their return, many feared the collective knowledge and the cooperation between the public and private sectors that proved vital to combat success would be lost. Industry and military leaders vowed to capitalize on the technical lessons and camaraderie shared during their battlefield experiences. SAME was formed from this vow. In 1919, Maj. Gen. William M. Black, USA, the Army's Chief of Engineers, appointed a nine-officer board to consider the formation of an "association of engineers" that would preserve and expand upon connections formed in war and promote the advancement of engineering and its related professions. Early in 1920, the first SAME Posts were established, providing former colleagues and new members opportunities to connect face-to-face, and establishing Post-to-community relationships across the country.
SAME Piscataqua Post
The Piscataqua Post of SAME represents Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Our members meet once a month. Our meetings are typically held at restaurants between Portsmouth, NH and Portland, ME and are sponsored by member firms who present on topics of relevance. These meetings are a great place to meet representatives from local engineering and construction firms engaged in government contracting in support of military missions.
The Piscataqua Post also provides funding for local qualified students to attend military engineering and construction camps, provides scholarships for engineering students at the University of New Hampshire and the University of Maine, and supports military focused benevolent activities in the region and across the country.
