STEM ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION CAMP

Camp

SAME has been supporting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) events for over 30 years, and conducting camps for more than 20 years. Our camps, in partnership with the military services, are world-class and feature a very impressive record of producing thousands of engineers and STEM leaders. They provide a rigorous experience for students interested in exploring STEM skills and careers. Campers gain a sense of what it takes to become a STEM professional and what options exist to explore that interest from high school to college and beyond.

Each camp offers a mix of hands-on, challenge-based activities that help campers learn fundamentals of engineering and construction. Each camp also offers tours and field trips to area businesses and institutions that highlight their respective technical areas. Individual curriculum activities may vary year to year, but all use a competitive environment to promote growth in leadership, team-building, and problem-solving. The competitive nature helps build camaraderie among the campers and mentors.

Mentors Wanted! Help Inspire Future Engineers

The success of the SAME Camps Program depends on the experience and talents contributed by staff, cadets, college students, teachers, and other volunteers that come from our many SAME Posts and partner organizations. They fill critical mentor and staff roles onsite each week.

For the 2023 camp season, SAME is recruiting candidates for the following positions: Mentors (8-20 per camp); Assistant Mentors/Squad Leaders (4 to 10 per camp); Support Loggies (3 to 10 per camp); and Staff (3 to 10 per camp).

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Steve Taylor, SAME Camps Program Manager, at staylor@same.org.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

THE 2023 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION WINDOW HAS CLOSED!

Once again, the San Diego Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) will be granting scholarships to local college and university students in 2023. This year, our target is to award scholarship amounts ranging from $5,000 to $10,000. Pursuant with the 2023 SAME Strategic Plan, this year's scholarship program will be open to individuals pursuing a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Architecture.

In addition, we have three specific scholarships honoring Captain Tom Crane, Rear Admiral Ben Montoya, and Jackie Price-Dunn. The Jackie Price-Dunn scholarship will be awarded to a female applicant who, in addition to meeting all other requirements, best represents the ideals that Jackie demonstrated: a dedication to professional excellence, proactive involvement in the local community, and a passion for helping others to reach their personal goals.

Applications are accepted directly from students online. The candidates must be undergraduate or graduate students and display enthusiastic promise in their studies. Grade point average will not be the only consideration. Involvement in other professional activities and organizations, employment and internship history, future plans, and financial need are among other key considerations.

You must be a SAME member and member of the San Diego Post to apply for the scholarship and student membership is FREE for students 25 and under. Anyone out of that category (ie., prior military) can join as young members. Young member rates are $40 for the year.
