The Society of American Military Engineers offers a unique series of engineering and construction camps/programs that are designed for high school students who excel in math, science and technology and are interested in pursuing engineering, architecture or related fields in college. These camps are high energy, hands–on events for students from across the country and around the world. 


The camps are led by a professional staff of engineers from the military services and private industry.Each camp is approximately one week in duration and each has its own unique focus and theme.The Engineering & Construction camps are a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience what engineers, architects and builders do, to learn practical skills, and to gain exposure to the military services.


For 2020, the Philadelphia Post will sponsor two students – one each to attend either the U.S. Army Camp, the U.S. Marine Corps Camp, the U.S. Navy Camp, the U.S. Air Force Camp, the U.S. Air Force Academy Camp, or the U.S. Coast Guard’s Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) Program.Dates and locations of these programs are noted below.


SAME/U.S. Army Engineering and Construction Camp - Dates: June 14, 2020 through June 20, 2020; Location: US Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg, MS

SAME/U.S. Marine Corps Engineering and Construction Camp - Dates: June 21, 2020 through June 27, 2020; Location: Camp Lejeune, North Carolina

SAME/U.S. Navy Engineering and Construction Camp - Dates:June 21, 2020 through June 27, 2020; Location: -- Port Hueneme, California

SAME/U.S. Air Force Academy Engineering and Construction Camp - Dates:June 24, 2020 through June 30, 2020; Location: -- U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado

SAME/U.S. Air Force Engineering and Construction Camp - Dates:July 19, 2020 through July 25, 2020; Location: -- Scott Air Force Base, Scott AFB IL

SAME/U.S. Coast Guard Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) Program - Dates:Session I -- July 5, 2020 through July-10,2020, Session II -- July 12, 2020 through July 17, 2020, and Session III – July 19, 2020 through July 24, 2020; Location: -- U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut


Applications for the Marine Corps Camp, the Navy Camp and the Air Force Camp must be submitted through the SAME National web portal by March 16, 2020.SAME National will notify the Philadelphia Post of applications that identify the Philadelphia Post as a possible sponsor.The Philadelphia Post will make its final student selections by March 28, 2020 and will notify SAME National and prospective applicants.The link to the SAME National website outlines eligibility requirements for these three camps, as well as application submittal requirements:http://www.same.org/stemcamps.Applicants selected by SAME National will be notified by the SAME National Engineering & Construction Camp Registrar well in advance of the start of the Engineering Camp.

The evaluation process of prospective applicants for these programs by the Philadelphia Post will be based on the application materials that are provided.The Philadelphia Post will pay the full registration fee and travel costs associated with each successful applicant that is sponsored by the Philadelphia Post.

Philly Post Involvement with STEM Camps

This year, two Philly Post members participated as STEM Camp Mentors.

 

STEM_Michael 

Michael Hansen was part of Camp Lejeune NC, which is home to 2nd MEF- Marine Expeditionary Force.

Michael's comments on his experience:

  • At the base we were specially located as an area called Courthouse Bay which is the training area for the Marine Engineering School – were Marines learn how to be Combat Engineers 
  • I got down there on Saturday June 17th. There was an intro/briefing and then checked into my barracks room (like a old school college dorm room) 
  • On Sunday the students/campers arrived at various times throughout the day
  • I was assigned as a mentor with one other younger fellow to Echo Squad – one of five squads of ten campers 
  • Each squad also was assigned a squad leader who was an active duty Marine combat engineer 
  • My campers were 7 males and 3 females hailing from NC/SC/VA/TX/NV/NJ 
  • One Monday we started early entering into a week long competition between the five squads 
  • Each day started early and 0600 with formation and chow in the mess hall 
  • Then each day there was an event – typically including a classroom session, a design and then construction – major projects included: Build a concrete beam, build a trebuchet, build a storm water BMP, and build a cardboard AAV (amphibious assault vehicle = boat) 
  • There was also a volleyball tournament, an engineering confidence course, and a trip to the demolition range plus some cookouts, ice cream, time in the pool and trip to PX 
  • Great week with great kids. My squad finished tied for 2nd and we did have the most outstanding camper of the week on our squad

 

STEM Camps
Sharon Krock, North Atlantic Regional Vice President, was part of the US Air Force Academy Camp in Colorado Springs, CO. 

Sharon's comments on her experience

I attended the US Air Force Academy Camp in Colorado Spring, CO June 26 - July 2, 2018 as a mentor to the Echo Flight.  96 students from across the country attended the Engineering & Construction Camp and were divided in to 8 flights of 12 students.  Each flight had two mentors that have been working in a STEM-related field and one assistant mentor that is enrolled in a STEM major in college. 

 The week was full of varying events and activities meant to challenge the students and foster their curiously, and build their teamwork and project management skills.  I know we have a bright future ahead with these students leading the charge!

2018 SAME STEM Engineering & Construction Camp Scholarships

Attention: Rising 10-12th grade high-school students who are interest in engineering and construction careers.

Do you want to work as part of a real engineering or construction project team this summer? These Military Service summer camps will provide students an opportunity to broaden their engineering knowledge and apply problem solving techniques while competing among their teams. (There will also be time for FUN!) SAME Philadelphia Post will partially fund up to three students to attend an SAME Engineering & Construction camp.

Submit an Application

Scholarship Process: Scholarship/camp applicants will be initially selected by the Philadelphia Post. The Philadelphia Post will then nominate a primary and two alternate campers to the SAME camp selecting officials. Students selected for a camp will receive a scholarship to pay for their tuition and travel expenses.

Basic Scholarship Criteria: At least 15 years of age, minimum 3.2 GPA, U.S. Citizen, on track to attend college for STEM degree.
