Student Chapter

Objectives of the Omaha Student Post Committe:
  1. Continue to seek interest of students at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in being members of the Student Chapter.
  2. Support Student Chapter initiative and invite and recognize student members at monthly Post membership meetings.
  3. Mentor Student Chapter initiatives and provide support and oversight to ensure the chapter prospers and is robust.

On February 2, the UNO SAME Student Chapter hosted a Revit Seminar to teach students the basics of Revit and give some specific pointers on the scheduled SAME Student Chapter E-Week competition. Todd Shackelford from Leo A Daly presented on some of the basics of Revit and how it is implemented in engineering. Thank you to Todd for taking time out of his schedule to present this seminar!

On February 20 during E-Week, an AutoCAD and Revit Competition was hosted by the UNO SAME Student Chapter, promoting it across disciplines and grade levels. The challenge for the students was to create a castle. The event was both a competition and a learning process for students, and the judges helped answer questions in addition to grading the resulting drawings. Prizes were awarded based on participation and the complexity of the drawings. Participating judges were Kevin Busacker from Leo A Daly, Dr. Avery Schwer, a professor and the faculty advisor for the student chapter, and Dave Packard from the Army Corps of Engineers. The SAME Student Chapter would like to thank those who volunteered their time to organize and judge this event. It turned out to be a success! The resulting top three prize winners were UNO students Tyler Reed, winning first place, Edward McNamara, winning second place, and Riley Johnson, winning third place.

ERDC Presentation
November 17, 2016

On November 17, the UNO SAME Student Chapter hosted a presentation on current engineering and scientific research at the USACE Engineering Research and Development Center (ERDC). Johnette Shockley presented on what types of projects ERDC does, career opportunities, and the types of new technologies being explored or developed by ERDC. The presentation was given while students dined on pizza and took notes, and the presentation generated a lot of interest and questions from student members. Thank you to Johnette for volunteering her time to speak at this event!

On October 1, the UNO SAME Student Chapter participated in a community service project with Habitat for Humanity called Framing Frenzy. Students volunteered their Saturday to work with other volunteers to put sheathing and roof trusses on a house. It was a great learning experience for everyone involved while giving back to the community.

The UNO SAME Student Chapter hosted a fall semester social event September 7. UNO students from a variety of disciplines gathered at the Peter Kiewit Institute for food and networking. SAME Omaha Post President, COL Henderson, and Army Corps of Engineers Dave Packard and Ted Streckfuss spoke about some of the exciting projects that they have worked on during their careers and about the many benefits of SAME, including scholarship opportunities. COL Henderson also presented an award to the UNO SAME student chapter for achieving the designation of Distinguished Student Chapter during the 2015-2016 school year.

The UNO SAME Student Chapter hosted a presentation on Hydrologic Engineering on March 28. Ryan Larsen, a Hydraulic Engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers, presented on the different aspects of Hydrologic Engineering at the Corps and shared some of his experiences working on projects over the years. Thank you to Ryan Larsen for volunteering to speak at this event!

UNO SAME hosted a AutoCAD 3D Seminar on February 11 to prepare for an open competition during PKI's E-Week. Tom Glidewell from Lamp Rynearson & Associates presented on a simple plan for designing a castle. This design would be used as the design drawing for the upcoming competition. In attendance with the students, Omaha Post member Chris Langan and Post President Dave Packard were also in attendance. A large thanks goes out to Tom, Chris, and Dave for their attendance and assistance with this event.

The UNO SAME Student Chapter hosted an AutoCAD 3D Competition on February 22 for students to use what they learned during the seminar or on their own to build a castle. The top three drawings were winners of gift cards for prizes. Above are screenshots of the castles built from the winners. First place went to Yazz Alhaddadi, second place went to Katie Schwarz, and third place went to Jake Ferrin. Thanks to Tom Glidewell, Chris Langan, and SAME faculty advisor Dr. Avery Schwer for volunteering to judge this event.

The UNO SAME Student Chapter hosted a social welcome back event on Thursday evening, January 28, at Clancy's Pub. Interested students and student members attended and enjoyed pizza and wings while getting to know each other and the Omaha Post members who could attend. We would like to thank Dave Packard, Cathy Grow, and John Remus for taking time out of their evenings to be there. The event was a great success!

Microsoft Excel Seminar and Social Dinner
March 30, 2015

On March 30, the UNO SAME Student Chapter hosted a Microsoft Excel seminar after a social dinner. Guest presenter Caleb White from the US Army Corps of Engineers taught two 45-minute sessions on the software, first going over basics, tips, and tricks, and then working on more advanced formulas, graphing, and macros. The seminar was a great success, and the limited number of seats quickly filled.

Over 30 students participated in the event, asking questions and following along during the interactive presentations. They learned more efficient ways to complete simple projects, and methods to solve complex problems in Excel. We would like to thank Caleb White for volunteering his time to present at this seminar.

The UNO SAME Student Chapter hosted an AutoCAD 3D competition on February 23 in honor of E-Week. Omaha Post professional members Chris Langan and Tom Glidewell from Lamp Rynearson & Associates volunteered their time as judges for the event. Dr. Avery Schwer, the Student Chapter Faculty Advisor and professor at the university, and Meagan Kurmel, a graduate student and student chapter member, also attended the event as judges.

The challenge for the students was to create a castle in 3D using AutoCAD. The event was both a competition and a learning process for students, and the judges helped answer questions in addition to grading the resulting drawings. Students got to learn more about the 3D side of AutoCAD, and won prizes for participation and the complexity of their drawings.

The SAME Student Chapter would like to thank those who volunteered their time to organize and judge this event. It turned out to be a success!

The UNO SAME Student Chapter hosted two AutoCAD seminars on November 8th. In the morning guest presenter Todd Schackelford from Leo A Daly presented on some of the basics of Revit and how it is implemented in engineering. In the afternoon, guest presenter Tom Glidewell, from Lamp Rynearson & Associates, presented on some of the basics of AutoCAD Civil 3D and how it is implemented at LRA.

The Student Chapter would like to thank Todd and Tom for taking time out of their weekend to share their expertise with the students! We also would like to thank Chris Langan from LRA for his help in scheduling a presenter and for assisting Tom during his seminar. About 20 students participated in each seminar, and all gave positive reviews and thanks to the volunteers who presented. The Student Chapter hopes to make these seminars a tradition in upcoming years!
