The Fort Benning - Columbus, GA Post provides scholarships to deserving students pursuing an engineering or science degree from a College or University. Applicants should have an interest in Military Engineering. However, all deserving applications are encouraged to apply.

 2019 Scholarship recipients will receive:

  • $2,000 1 year scholarship
  • $1,500 1 year scholarship
  • $1,500 1 year scholarship
  • $1,500 1 year scholarship

The scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior or college freshman student
enrolled in or accepted into an approved 2 or 4-year curriculum leading to a degree in
Engineering, Engineering Technology or related program. Student's permanent home
residence must be within a 50-mile radius of Fort Benning, Georgia.

Award of this scholarship will be based on past and present academic attainment,
student activities, recommendation and interest in engineering and/or the military. In
addition, enrollment in a ROTC program is a good indicator of interest in Military
Engineering, but ROTC enrollment is not a requirement for scholarship eligibility.

Award of the scholarship will be recommended by a selection panel in accordance with the by-laws of the Fort Benning-Columbus Post of The Society of American Military

Payment will be made to the student after proof is furnished of enrollment in a school that is consistent with the student's application. Applications must be mailed to the Fort Benning-Columbus Post, SAME, by the student.

Applications shall be submitted using the application form attached and postmarked no later than Friday, May 3, 2019.

The scholarship winners will be announced June 7, 2019 at our 22nd Annual SAME Golf Tournament on Fort Benning. All winners will be given a free 1 year membership to the Society of American Military Engineers.

Young Member

Numerous activities in the local post are geared toward Young Members.Young Member Programs are designed for those SAME members 35 years of age and younger.


Field Trips/Programs
In the past, members from the local post have visited Lawson Army Airfield and New Barracks constructed at Fort Benning.  Future programs include working with area schools and assisting in area clean-up activities.  Many of the guest speakers speak on topics of interest to young members.

In the past, young members have been successful earning in PE reference materials and recommendation letters from other members as they prepare to take the PE Exam.  Some young members have utilized the contacts made as a member of SAME to seek new employment.  Young Members (YM) are an important part of the local chapter.  Most of the local post's leadership are young members.  YMs are active in MATHCOUNTS, Help the Hooch and are active supporting engineering events and presentations in area schools.

National Young Member Affairs Committee
For those interested in serving on a national committee here is your chance.  The National Committee is looking for around 7-10 people across the country.  The time commitment is a conference call every two months.  This is an excellent opportunity to tell SAME HQ what is going on out there and they can make the Society better for Young Members.
